  • I understood it perfectly. I think the exchange does open up a course of specualtion for John about just what Jamie may have experienced that caused him to have such a complete and violent revulsion.   • Yes, it is a turning point for Lord John -- the point where he finally realizes the reason for Jamie's hostility toward him. Clearly he wishes he could take the words back, but he can't, it's out in the open between them now, and neither of them will ever forget it. To me, the scene in the stable and John's reaction to it has the emotional power of a grenade going off -- sudden, explosive, and leaving those in the vicinity badly shaken and trying to pick up the pieces.
