I love this conversation. Even though he and Claire are uncomfortable with each other and each jealous of the other how nice for John to be able to be who he is. I think Claire is wary of John's feelings for Jamie not only because of her feelings about Willie but from physical memory of the depth of her reaction to what Jamie endured at Wentworth. I agree that she is justified in feeling a bit prickly- the doesn't ever want anyone to hurt Jaime, and went through a terrible ordeal with him. I, however, read John a bit differently in this scene- yes he can be who he is...but is that comfortable? Easy? Maybe easier because he doesn't need to hide his feelings or "self" but at the same time, is he still not suffering because who he is will always be unacceptable to the world at large? - That's an interesting thought. Do you think that might be one more instance of the common ground he has with Jamie? That both are (at least sometimes) outlawed and outcast, and know what it is to live among people who would like to kill them for who they are?
