Subject: Yes, yes, teddie, that's exactly what I was thinking, and why I included this quote! There's a moment shortly before the betrayal, when Percy is trying to compliment John on his bravery under fire, and John is just embarrassed, alarmed at his own continuing attraction to this man who, he now realizes, doesn't "perceive the essential truth of the matter ... it was his duty." (p. 320). So, ironically, the principal love interest in the book, and "new brother by marriage", is the one man with whom Grey cannot share an authentic sense of brotherhood. Even in terms of the underground "brotherhood" of homosexuals, Percy fails him, by bringing the betryal "home"; indeed seeming to ask to be discovered.
In reply to: teddie 's message, "Poor, foolish Percy. As much as John cares for him, Percy is not a true member of any brotherhood. No longer an honorable step-brother for John and Hal, and not as an honorable officer. John shows enormous restraint in this scene despite his outburst, confirming that he and Percy are truly worlds apart now." on 05:10:54 10/18/07 Thu
