Great way to put it - he hates to think! There is something about the delicate way Harry tells John about Percy's whereabouts, when he visits during John's recovery from the shrapnel surgery. Quarry tells him that Longstreet is back in England, and updates him on the status of Percy's legal situation. It's completely beneath the surface, but I felt as if I could sense that Harry knows something, but knows that to be John's friend, to love him as a brother, is to be discreet. Plus, he "hates to think," especially about something that there's no point in speaking of, so he feels no need to dig deeper just to satisfy his own curiosity. Yes, though Harry's delicacy in telling John about Percy could as easily be on the basis that Percy _was_ John's step-brother, and he knew they'd been good friends before Percy's arrest.
