The easing of Jamie's pain at the separation from everyone he loves, including the land of Scotland, was a beautiful thing to read. He even states later that he could appreciate what John gave him - horses, fresh air, and familiar work to do - this was the most freedom John could arrange at the time. I was glad that Jamie came to some sort of peace with the losses in his life that allowed him to go on. I was surprised a bit about how lost he was when he came back to Lallybroch, later. I'm wondering if something will happen in LJ and the Scottish Prisoner that will explain his sense of drifting upon his return. -- LJG Discussion board

I think much of his feelings back at Lallybroch had to do with his sense of loss over Willie. I don't know if it alludes to it in the main books or not, but I imagine he may have been depressed. - Iwould have to say that Jamie not telling anyone about Willie, yet still so vividly grieving "something", is a strong force when J returns to Lallybroch. He is not the same man who went to Ardsmuir, and he takes some adjusting to. Ten years of things have happened that Lallybroch has no knowledge of. I am sure we could imagine how changed our sibling or child might be after an experience like this. It would be like being 20 and leaving home when your siblings are 8 or 9. Then coming back 10 years later to discover that they are now the age you were when you left. You still think of them as 8 or 9.
