I am thinking Stephan is almost certainly gay or at least bisexual. Remember when John told Percy that if he'd been the heir, destined to inherit the title, he would have been forced to marry and have children? It was a relief to John that Hal had taken care of that responsibility, so John could live as he liked. Stephan inherited the title, he had to marry, produce heirs. It seems to me from the quotes I have found that Stephan is pursuing John. Didn't you feel Stephan's regret when he told John the story of the gay German prince, who's lover was killed before his eyes, who was then forced to become a soldier and marry? Both John and Stephan are honorable men. You will see how attracted they are to each other over the next few quotes. I don't think she'd have made Stephan such an amazing character if she didn't intend to use him to make us crazy. I'm betting in the Scottish Prisoner John and Stephan may be forced to make some really painful decisions, something sure to really burn up the pages.
