Subject: WOW, Jane - you have done great work here! It is amazing to see these quotes pulled together. I had forgotten about this moment, with another touch, and a kiss. And the horse. (!!! There's always so much suggestive sexual tension around horses with these DG couples, isn't there?? *g*). Where before I may have been wishfully speculating, now I agree with you that something more is certain to happen between these two. Not that it could be a happy ending, at least not in any immediate sense, since one is married and the other will be married. But I agree, there is breathtaking potential for intense emotion, passion, heartbreak, honor, loyalty and dignity between these two. John's realization that to acknowledge desire between them would be Stephan's ruin (at that point in time) does show a kind of selfless love. And you're right, gestures like the gift of Karolus do suggest a purposeful yet unspoken courtship.

Replies:

  • I feel so badly for Stephan that he must lead sucha duel life. His wife is duly churning out heirs so he's attending to his duty there but he seems so much larger than life that it's tragic that he's so at odds with himself. I wonder if his orientation is something he hasn't admotted to himself yet? He tells himself that his regard of John is fraternal but finds himself drawn anyway..... • Ooh, you must have had a chance to read the book up at the cottage - hooray! (NT) -- pamelalass, 15:17:28 10/04/07 Thu
