  • (Lurking about) Thanks for your wonderful week, Jane. I adore the glimpses into the tender friendship of Stephan and Lord John. (NT) -- teddie, 06:20:30 10/06/07 Sat

  • Yes, Jane, you gave us a marvelous week - thank you so much! To pick up on something maddiej suggested earlier in the week, I think it is interesting that John is able to say the words "I love you" here, and I do think it is in the context of the kind of "brotherly" fellowship that was possible in this period -- manifesting intimacy without necessarily becoming sexual. John and Stephen seem to be existing in the space where "particular" friendship and homosexual desire might occasionally overlap, but not always, and not if one or both are deliberately holding back. I had forgotten that John uses the word "brother" here, and it suggests again that there are at least several layers of meaning wrapped up in the book's title.
