Tell your friend you are concerned. Ask if he's in therapy or taking medication. Offer the number of your local suicide prevention hotline or tell him to call 911 if he is really afraid of hurting himself. Has he told you how he would go about killing himself? If he has thought this through, then the threat is more immediate. Let him know he need not go through this alone.
