Subject: Interesting how alike the brothers are. It reminds me of the sword play between Jamie and Dougal. The older more experienced fighter who taught the younger, the earnestness of the "play". There's the parallel also of showing off for a lover. John is very aware of Percy's eyes. Jamie shows off for Claire.

  • Ooh, ladies, what lovely insights! Helka, I love your idea that "brotherhood" and "blade" can be interpreted as opposite sides of a coin: loyalty vs. faithlessness, trust vs. suspicion. Certainly knowing someone with the intimacy of a "brother," either literally or symbolically, is a blade that can "cut both ways"... And kgp, I was thinking of a parallel with Jamie and Ian Sr. as brothers-in-arms, but I like your idea about Dougal, and the notion of the older mentor being surpassed by his brilliant pupil. There are some passages in DG that are jam-packed with layers of meaning, on the level of the language itself, and the echoes of character and narrative. This one is also visually riveting, I think.
