Subject: oops...I forgot to look it over before sending, sorry for the weird format. I chose this quote because..well, I guess because I was struck particularly by this aspect of John's attitude. That yes, he does what he does as a duty. And his embarassment at being praised for this is telling- It seems to be that he doesn't just act out of duty, but because he is rather a special man; because he has care for those he is entrusted with.
In reply to: Oleander 's message, "Taken from Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade, chapter24, pg 320 "'That,' he added, his tone offhand as he turned to dip the cloth again, 'and that i am proud of you." Alarmed and stirred buy the kiss, deeply embarrassed at the praise- and not a little shocked that Percy did not instinctively perceive the essentual truth of the matter- Grey began to say the obvious: it was his duty."" on 18:59:28 09/06/07 Thu

  • This whole section is food for thought. Percy's looking at Lord John with an expression between awe and revulsion was pretty much my reaction to Lord John. The "essential truth" struck me also. I understand John feeling a duty to his men, but is there more to it? Duty to king? Or is this an echo of Jamie's advice to Roger that there is no such thing as fair fighting, the object is to win and anything goes. And does barley water really help cure eye trouble? • I am having a hard time expressing what this evoked for me. I guess I was just moved by LJ. He sees his actions as not being worthy of praise, because he is merely doing his duty. But I think what Percy is trying to get across is that what John does and accomplishes is more than just duty, beyond just the call of service. That John sees nothing admirable in his actions when he is the person who takes care of everyone...struck me. He is so layered.... (NT) -- Oleander, 19:31:48 09/06/07 Thu

  • Barley water was a popular panacea for all sorts of things--you could either drink it or apply it. It probably didn't rally help, but it wouldn't have hurt either--except for your tastebuds, of course. (NT) -- Susannah, 05:15:11 09/07/07 Fri
