I fell in love with LJG before I read the Outlander books, I read Private Matter first. I couldn't get enough of him in Voyager. I love that he is a total product of his time .....but he is gay. It is so unusual. On the subject of bawdy; remember when Bree saw him coming out of the slave quarters, I always imagined he was having a fling with the slave who spoke with a Scots accent (the one who ended up on the slave ship at the end of ABOSAA) Then LJG could think of Jamie. -- LJG Discussion board

This was a whole huge topic at one point on compuserve. I think I even brought it up once. According to DG, there is nothing in the text to suggest who or if he had an affair. All we know is he was "ringing like a bell" when he left. It was our imaginations that made it seem a slave. It could have been anybody or anything (perhaps just a flirtation).
