I think much of his feelings back at Lallybroch had to do with his sense of loss over Willie. I don't know if it alludes to it in the main books or not, but I imagine he may have been depressed. No Claire, No Willie, No Lairdship. That's one of the reasons I'm never angered at Jenny. She had to help him deal with all of this. -- LJG Discussion board

He even states later that he could appreciate what John gave him - horses, fresh air, and familiar work to do - this was the most freedom John could arrange at the time.
