Subject: How do I change my almost black hair to red?

My hair is nearly black. I want it red and have been to many salons over the years. When they dye it, the color only shows up in the sun. I want it deep red. Sometimes they have bleached/lightened it, but I still don't see a difference. I am considering bleaching my hair, then dying it red to get what I want, but I'm a little scared to mess it up. How can I do this safely on my own, since no hair salon does it the way I want it?
