Subject: My own random concert update...

Caught the KMFDM (with the Birthday Massacre) show last night; club show, great crowd lots of old farts like myself (well, old farts by club standards) out to catch the show.

The Birthday Massacre was... er, lacking as a live gig (haven't heard their CD, but some people seem to like it, so I can't judge that one yet). The backing band sounds good, mind you, but at some point in time they decided to be a gimmick band, and the matching outfits and obviously-tacked-on stage "mannerisms" really weren't convincing. Drop the choreography and just play. As for the lead singer, well, um, her lack of stage presence doesn't justify her weak voice, and vice-versa. She's especially fond of the tacked-on mannerisms, and they're pretty much robotic. Having a band with a female lead singer tends to be seen as playing with gimmick fire to begin with - if she's not particularly good too, well, then you're really asking for problems. Enough said on that.

KMFDM, unsurprisingly, was a loud and unrelenting wall of music. Two mixers, two guitarists, and a drummer who must be in amazing shape for the beating he laid upon that set. Having mostly older KMFDM tracks, I'm assuming the heavy guitar sound has arrived in the later albums, and they get added for the tour anyway. Personally I like the guitar-added assault better anyway, and it made for a great show. Low stage antics (good thing - see above paragraph) which isn't surprising considering everyone's kinda occupied with their gear. The crowd was good too - hadn't seen a decent mosh pit in a while, and the stage divers gave me a hit of nostalgia (admittedly, it's been a while since I've been to concerts, but still fun to see for a change). Apparently they swing by the west coast in 2006, so I'd recommend it; it was worth the $27 (Cdn) to get in.

Otherwise, I'm still in grad school, as they are still supplying me money to be here. Now to get back to the endless writing.
