To Infinity and Beyond

In the middle of our chat about lipo-dissolve and her Valentine's
Day concert with Gary Valenciano, a Chinese-firecracker question hit
the room. "So, when will you be the legah wife?" we ask Zsa Zsa
Padilla, who is rather struck more by the jack-in-the-box humor of
the query than its inexorability. After the annulment of her
marriage to dentist Modesto Tatlonghari reached the airwaves, we
fancy that that has become her FAQ (as in, "Frequently Asked
Question"). Zsa Zsa repeats the famous line from Mano Po 2: My Home
with cinematic authenticity: "Legah wife, wala pa eh [none at the
moment]. Kris tells me it should be next year." And then we become
nonplussed for a moment. Friendships with these two do not seem to
have a limit! So we ask Kris Aquino, who has been not-so-silently
listening to the interview, why she set the wedding for next year.
Actually, the only thing stopping Kris from hogging the tape
recorder's time is she's not crazy in love at the moment so she
seems tear-duct dry and confession-free. Correct? Correct "Kasi,
it's 2006. Two plus six. That makes eight. 0, infinity." Then Zsa
Zsa merely replies, without elaborating, ìIt will just happen.î
Hopefully everything in that department will just catch up with her.
It's interesting, too, how memorable performances catch up with an
artist. In a cast as big as Mother Lily's Chinoy epic, Zsa Zsa
managed to milk out a standout act. Her turn as the unnoticed
Chinese wife showed comic caricature that espoused pathos, hilarity
and hysteria. It is one role (and one movie line) that will be as
memorable as Zsa Zsa's image in real life. Secure, giving, rational,
intelligent, confident, talented. Very much the opposite of the
absurd legal wife in the movie. Except that she and her character
share the same motherly instincts. As she plays mother to Karylle
(who also played her daughter in Mano Po 2), Zsa Zsa also tiptoes
the fine line of healthy artistic competition. Although busy hosting
ASAP, she goes out of her way to watch Karylle whenever she has a
number for ABS-CBN's rival show, GMA's SOP. "Sometimes she'd call me
up and say, `You've got to watch me Mom, I'm singing!' So I watch
her in our monitors. But oftentimes our numbers go out on the same
time. I'm not sure if she watches me. I don't think they have
monitors over there." With regard to the ratings of the rival shows
Zsa Zsa says: "I'm not sure. We're doing fine over here. I think
they're doing great over there. GMA is taking good care of her
[Karylle]. We're not given the ratings anymore."
Foremost in their relationship, she will always be the caring mom.
Advice is given but only constructively. Like the time her daughter
was reluctant to try her luck in acting. "I told her that not many
singers are given the opportunity to act. So many people would want
to be in her shoes." This proved to be a gem of advice. After
Karylle's stint in Twin Hearts, she became a regular in the
primetime soaps and was featured as one of the cast members of Mano
Po 2. Apparently, Zsa Zsa dispenses motherly concern over more than
just career moves. "It was me who gave her all these short skirts!
You know her, she was a manang before. I'm the bad influence," she
chuckles. "I told her it's show business. It took a while for her to
adjust. I told her, 'When will you start wearing those, when you
have stretch marks already?' Sayang!"
Zsa Zsa has lost a considerable amount of weight. Contrary to rumors
of her getting hooked on anything or undergoing any altering
procedures, she attributes it to her getting sick. Kris confirms
this. "Zsa Zing got this bug!" However, she doesn't deny getting
lipo-dissolves. After all, she and Kris are the visible endorsers of
the Belo Medical Group, the refuge of women who risk life and limb
just to stave off a little flab. "Lipodissolve is a painless
procedure, really. Dolphy would ask me, `Where's the hole?' But I
just tell him a needle just injects a chemical to melt the fat," she
elaborates, while from behind Kris talks about how unbelievably high
Zsa Zsa's threshold of pain is. "It's not really painful, I swear,"
Zsa Zsa protests, as she tries to convince her loquacious friend.
It is the week prior to Valentine's Day and Zsa Zsa is excited about
her concert with Gary V. Sheís also excited about her upcoming
mother-daughter concert with Karylle at the Music Museum. ìIt will
be on Motherís Day and Kuya Germs [German Moreno] will be
producing
Si Kuya Germs talaga!î
Zsa Zsa has seen everything in showbiz, a likely fact for someone
who has stayed in the industry for 22 years. There seems to be no
signs of slowing down for her. She intends to stay as long as there
is an audience. She explains, ìI always think of retiring. But I
am
sure to look for it [performing]. A lot of people older than I still
sing. I get inspired by that. If after 10 more years Iíd still be
able to, then I will stay.î Zsa Zsa gas been doing the straight TV
appearances for ABS-CBN for seven years. ìTV is an important
medium,î she explains. ìWhen youíre in it, you donít have
a certain
market. Youíre appealing both to kids and the elders. Youíre
exposed
the whole time.î
But doesnít she get tired? She does, because for her, ìSinging
is
more difficult. It depends on your bodyís condition. You can still
have a taping or shooting if youíre running a fever but with a
live
concert, itís different. What happens if your voice disappears?
This
happens to every singer. Best way to deal with this is singers must
take care of their voices. Itís a gift. No drinking. No
smoking.î
Zsa Zsa is awed by the flood of new talents, especially after
hosting Star in a Million with Edu Manzano, a program that was
reformatted to take on a more American Idol-ish appearance, and a
new breed of hosts got on board to fly it. This is what she has to
say for all aspiring singers: ìItís all right to dream big, but
one
must always keep her feet landed on the ground. Itís hard when
your
head swells up. Youíll lose everything.î Zsa Zsa Padillaís
stay in
showbiz may not be forever, like the sign of infinity. But she goes
beyond your memory, to the memory of the lovely songs she sang. Like
she sings in her immortal song ìHiram,î her life and talents
are
borrowed. Someday she will have to return them, but so far she has
kept them with absolute grace.
