First Heartbreak

Last week, it was all fun and amusement as Search For The Star In A Million’s prestigious Champions League of Twelve showcased the talent and magnificence they were named Champions for. The Grand Presentation Night at the Aliw Theater was as splendid as can be. The night was right, the night sky a perfect backdrop for the Searchees who couldn’t help but outshine the stars in the heavens.

This week though, the most important outshining happens onstage and between the Searchees themselves. This week, it’s all business for the Twelve Searchees. It’s the Grand Finals Season of the Search that started it all, and it kicks off with the most appropriate theme for the first eliminations night—Heartbreak week—and it will be for the first eliminated contestant in the Search.

Tonight, the show gets down to the core—no frills, just music served the way it should be, at its best. The twelve Searchees vying for the top spot render timeless songs of love and heartache, their songs and their stories intertwined like two hearts that beat as one.

Three hearts that beat as one when it comes to the Hits, the heartbreakers came in full force: hearthrob Direk Rowell Santiago, crush ng bayan Ms. Agot Isidro and not since Randy Santiago did anyone look so well in shades as Mr. Wyngard Tracy. Heart hath no fury as these three Searchers whose hearts hold the fate of the twelve Searchees, decide whether they are hits or misses. Tonight they make an all-important verdict that could make or break the Searchees’ hearts. For the sure hits, it’s the Hit zone and for the misses, it’s the dreaded Danger zone.

First up is the Glam Rocker Jona Lumbera, asking “How Could An Angel Break My Heart”. It’s as if angels were singing in unison as Searcher Rowell Santiago assigns her to the Hit Zone. Star On The Rise Ryan Racal’s rise was far from ascent as Rowell broke the news and perhaps his heart—Ryan was the first to be in the danger zone. He sang “Half-Crazy” and will most probably be so until he is salvaged form the purgatory called the Danger Zone. Third searchee, Pop Dreamboy Hans Lee will have a goodnight’s sleep after tonight. No nightmares for him as he enters the Hit Zone. He “Can’t Cry Hard Enough” tears of joy for this one.

After the break, the second batch of Searchees take the stage and the verdicts. Pop Honey Nikki’s courage “To Love Again” was dampened after she was assigned to the Danger Zone, as with hearthrob Billy Joel Bartolome. Ms. Agot thinks “Muntik Nang Maabot ni Billy ang langit pero hindi niya naabot”. As for Balladeer Extraordinaire Jerome Sala, he gets the third spot in the Hit Zone, and no, he’s no “Panakipbutas!” Halfway into the show, it’s three hits and three misses.

And it seems, there are more misses to come. The Boy Next Door Myke Caluma and Star On The Move Veejay Aragon join the Danger Zone. Myke must have wanted to say “Please Don’t Ask Me” while Veejay hangs on to “Somewhere Down The Road” there is hope. Meantime, Teen Belter Dianafe Castillo will not go broken hearted, so no need to ask “Where Do Broken Hearts Go?” Wyngard Tracy’s answer is the Hit Zone anyway.

The last three Searchees enter the room with their hearts on their stomachs. Sexy Lady Christine Fernandez sings Sheena Easton’s “Almost Over You”, but the Searchers are not exactly impressed and Ms. Agot declares her Hit days over. Mabel follows and again, she can only say “Killing Me Softly” about her verdict. The last Searchee is the last Hit of the day. Mr. Soul Jorell Canuel sings Queen’s “Love of My Life” and Ms. Agot just loves it.

Twelve Searchees. Five Hits and Seven Misses. Tension mounts as the Searhers announce the salvaged Hits from the Danger Zone—Ryan, Nikki, Myke, Christine and Mabel… leaving only two behind in the Danger Zone: Billy Joel Bartolome and Veejay Aragon. Tension builds up even more…but not right after one last heart-stopping commercial break.

Heart-stopping? Take that back, it’s paralyzing! And even more gut-wrenching as Billy Joel and Veejay take the mic for a showdown. The two won’t go without a fight, but there can only be one final hit and that is Billy Joel Bartolome. It’s farewell for Star On The Move Veejay Aragon. Sarah pays tribute to him with a Raymond Lauchengco original, “Farewell”. Eyes well up as Searchers, Searchees, staff and fans bid goodbye to the heartbroken Cebuano charmer. And then there were eleven.

But from heartbreak, it’s gonna be Chichirya Night next week! Couch potatoes unite! It’s raining popcorns! The chichirya’s on us! The music and the spectacle too! Come one, come all! Your favorite movie themes, Search For The Star In A Million style! That’s the best style! Who will be eliminated and who will continue to be in the League? The Action, Comedy, Drama, and Suspense next week here in Search For The Star In A Million!

About the show:

A singing star search in the Philippines has never looked this good. It’s colorful, it’s hip, it’s young, it’s funky and it’s fast. Well that’s what you get when you put together two of the most successful and most formidable star-making giants in the country to come up with one grand production.

From ABS-CBN’s Star in a Million, the show that has produced new generation singing superstars, Erik Santos, Sheryn Regis, Marinel Santos, Johann Escanan, Frenchie Dy, Michael Cruz and Christian Bautista, and Viva Entertainment’s Search for a Star (formerly Star for a Night), that has created phenomenal pinoy singing idols, Sarah Geronimo, Rachelle Anne Go, Raymond Manalo and Mark Bautista, comes a fusion -- SEARCH FOR THE STAR IN A MILLION. The biggest, boldest, brightest singing star search in Philippine television history.

Hosted by four of the country’s hottest and most sought after singing superstars Sarah, Erik, Christian, and Mark, all of whom are singing contest champions themselves, this search is looking for the next multi-media, singing super sensation. The show is pulling all the stops to ensure that the grand champion will be someone who not only has the voice, but who also has the looks and that elusive all-important X-factor.

And what awaits the chosen Star in a Million? Nothing less than five million pesos worth of cash and prizes which includes a house and lot, a contract with Star Records, and a sure spot in ABS-CBN’s ASAP Mania. All that on top of all the other doors that will surely open for the grand champion.

No wonder the lines were endless during the auditions held all over the country. From the thousands who tried out from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, a shortlist of 111 were chosen. The 111 were trimmed down to 30. The thirty were grouped into three batches (Star Batch #1, Star Batch #2 and Star Batch #3) by drawing lots, and three elimination rounds were held to determine the top three from each group. All together these nine winners from each group composed the show’s Champions League of Ten. Only one more was needed to complete the league.

The top ten scorers from the 21 eliminated from the top 30 became eligible for the wildcard competition. Here the winner would complete the last remaining slot in the Champions League of Ten. However during the wildcard round, a surprise announcement was made. Not only one, not even two, but three Wildcard Searchees were given the chance to join the grand finals round or what is now popularly known as THE CHAMPIONS’ LEAGUE OF TWELVE. (no longer just ten)

To accomplish the goal of producing a well-rounded singing superstar, the members of this league have been undergoing rigorous vocal training and have been doing workshops in fashion, personality development, hosting, acting, and dancing, under experts in their respective fields. The audience have been a part of their journey to ultimate fame as they get to peek and eavesdrop into their emotional and physical journey and transformation via “The Road to Stardom,” The Search for the Star in a Millions daily reality show component. (Mondays to Fridays, 6pm)

Now, the champions league of twelve are hard at work preparing for their Grand Presentation Night on March 6, 2005 at the Aliw theater. This free admission show witll look and feel like a concert as Search for the Star in a Million promises to be the very first concert-contest! The Grand presentation night will be a musical extravaganza with the biggest singers in the country to help usher the champions league of twelve into the music industry.

The show’s got everything covered, and we want you to be a part of the ride. Be with us in discovering, polishing, and finally welcoming the next big thing. Witness the making of the next champion superstar! With Search for the Star in a Million, it’s your time to shine!
