"What you drive, what you wear, what you look like, are not really a factor on a day to day basis."

I have to disagree with this statement, just think about all the TV shows, magazines, so called newspapers talk about fashions celebs use, trying to get people to diet, etc. Now think about how many TV shows, magazines, newspapers report solid political, scientific news... not many I'd say. A vast majority of people in the USA are exposed to far more commerical ads, and can recall characters selling products or sports figures than something less sexy like academic, and historical figues....

each social group has its own dress code, think about bankers they all wear suits, people who go to NASCAR races would never wear what bankers wear on casual fridays (like "polo" shirts and slacks), ditto ever see a banker wear a "bud" shirt?

black kids who listen to rap, have their "bling" ware which would never be mistaken for "goth" ware or mexican kids in gangs even have their own look which is quite evident, from surfer kids, geeks, etc, etc....

this idea of fashion extends to cars, think any self respecting red neck would drive a low rider? Or imagine a mexian gang member driving a tricked out 4x4 monster truck... This is an dramatic example but hopefull ya get the idea, each social group has its own norms.

If fashion really didn't matter, then there car makers would not sell products like the H2...
