Regine Comes to the Defense of 'Off-Key' Sarah

SARAH is just a baby. She's doing everything all at the same time."
Like a protective big sister, Regine Velasquez came to the defense of Sarah
Geronimo who is said to be exhausted by her extremely busy schedule and
whose singing as a result is said to have become off-key.
"What the girl is doing is difficult," Regine said in Filipino in response
to a reporter's question. "She's doing T.V., concerts, small shows,
commercials. I myself am doing all these only now. I'm doing movies only
now. I'm doing soaps and T.V. shows only now. And I've been in this
industry for a long time."
Regine was speaking in a recent press conference for the launching of her
new show on GMA Network, "Pinoy Pop Superstar."
Sarah is the first grand winner of "Star for a Night." Regine sees herself
in the 16-year-old girl because they have similar beginnings. Both became
stars after winning the grand prize in a singing contest.
"I feel that maybe, the girl is not yet completely prepared for these
things all at once," she said. "It's a good thing that Viva gave her the
chance to do these, but she might not be prepared.
"Besides, she's tired," Regine said of Sarah. "Of course, if you do all
those things at the same time, that's really tough. And to think that she's
still going to school."
Regine could not hide her excitement over her new show, "Pinoy Pop Superstar."
"It's fun because the contestants have costume changes," she said. "We have
an opening number together and the outfits are coordinated, and then each
has another outfit for the solo number."
Unlike the popular "American Idol," in which contestants are often
ruthlessly judged in front of the camera, the judges on "Pinoy Pop
Superstar" will only offer "advice" on how a contestant can improve his/her
craft.
Regine says she'd rather be the show's host than be one of the judges. She
leaves that job to soul diva Jaya, T.V. director Floy Quintos and
arranger-composer Danny Tan.
"I'm there to mainly support the contestants," she said. "I don't believe
in tigbakan ng contestant. I get upset when I see a contestant getting hurt."
The filming of Regine's newest movie with Aga Muhlach and Judy Ann Santos
was stalled because the script had to be rewritten since it had Aga's
character dying at the end, which would look like a repeat of the
Aga-Kristine movie, "All My Life."
"I wasn't doing anything for about a month (while filming was put off), but
that gave me a chance to start working on a new album," Regine said, adding
that the new record will be composed of revivals.
She is in a new soap which also stars Ariel Rivera and Richard Gomez, but
taping hasn't started yet.
And as if her hands weren't full enough, she will also have a solo concert
in December titled "Reigning Still."
The concert title, she explained, is a play on her name. "It also has a
double meaning. I've been in the business for a long time and I've been
blessed with a lot. It doesn't really mean I'm reigning because I never
claimed that I'm the queen of whatever."
