BERRY'S IZARD PICKS UP 400th CAREER WIN AS LADY VIKINGS TOP LYON
Phillips Scores 27 Points To Lead Lady Vikings To 77-66 Victory

MOUNT BERRY, Ga....Lauren Phillips scored a game-high 27 points to lead Berry College to a 77-66 victory over Lyon College in a TranSouth Athletic Conference women's basketball game at Ford Gym in Mount Berry Saturday, giving Berry head coach Jim Izard his 400th career victory.

Berry (15-5, 1-3) fell behind early in the game, but Phillips tied the score 8-8 with with 16:04 to play in the first half and then Cori Cason nailed a three-pointer 32 seconds later to give the Lady Vikings their first lead. Berry never trailed again.

The Lady Vikings took a 35-28 lead into halftime, then outscored Lyon (4-10, 0-4) 42-38 in the second half despite taking just 16 shots from the floor, 11 less than the Pipers took in the same span. Berry made the shots count, however, hitting 10 of the 16 shots for a whopping 63 percent shooting mark over the final 20 minutes. Berry was also take advantage at the charity stripe, hitting 19 of 28 free throw attempts in the second half.

Phillips also pulled down a game-high seven rebounds. The freshman center was 6-for-9 from the field and 12-for-14 at the free throw line. She was joined in double figures by Deana Duncan, who scored 14 points, and Cason, who chipped in 12 points.

Prescilla Mathias led Lyon with 18 points.

Izard's 400th career win came in the 20th game of his 22nd year as a collegiate head coach. He began his coaching career at what is now West Alabama in 1980. Along with the Berry and West Alabama jobs, Izard has also coached at Louisiana-Lafayette (1982-83), DePaul (1983-88) and Indiana (1988-2000). He is Indiana's all-time leader among women's basketball coaches with 188 victories.

He came to Berry in 2001 and has coached the Lady Vikings to a 49-39 overall record since his arrival, including a 38-17 mark since the beginning of last season. Izard owns a career record of 400-247.

Izard and his Lady Vikings return to action Saturday against Lee University at Ford Gym. Tipoff time for that game has been changed to 6 p.m.
