LOS ANGELES-In a venue that hosted several NFL (National Football
League) Super Bowl Games, Olympic soccer matches and the most
popular rock bands and performers, ABS-CBN and TFC (The Filipino
Channel) staged on Saturday evening an unprecedented star-studded
overseas edition of "ASAP '05 Live."

An estimated crowd of 25,000 to 30,000 people came to watch what may
have been the biggest Filipino show ever presented in Southern
California at the historic Rose Bowl in Pasadena. As the LA area
continued to endure a heat wave, thousands of Filipinos braved the
sizzling temperature in the low 100s to meet ABS-CBN's stars in
booths erected on the football field.

Other spectators secured seats in the stadium before the show began
at about 5 p.m. Under a blazing sun that seemed to intensify the
proceedings onstage, the stars came out one by one to roaring cheers
from the huge audience.

"ASAP Mania" hosts Gary Valenciano, Martin Nievera, Kuh Ledesma and
Zsa Zsa Padilla led the impressive talent lineup. (On Tuesday at 3
a.m. L.A. time, Gary V suffered a hypoglycemic attack while he was
sleeping. He was rushed to a nearby hospital in Pasadena where his
condition was stabilized. Hours later, Mr. Pure Energy was fully
recovered and already shopping, according to sister Gina Martinez.)
Junior hosts for the evening were Ryan Agoncillo, very promising
newcomer Nikki Gil and Toni Gonzaga. Performing in a seemingly
endless series of production numbers were The Hunks (Jericho
Rosales, Diether Ocampo, Piolo Pascual and Carlos Agassi), Vina
Morales, Rachel Alejandro, Singing Champions Erik Santos and Sheryn
Regis, Judy Ann Santos, Roxanne Guinoo, Nikki Gil and Joross Gamboa.

Lea Salonga, Jasmine Trias, Nora Aunor and Antoinette Taus topped
the guest list. The Hunks' numbers were among the most applauded,
drawing screams and exciting the large crowd. Vina Morales was a
revelation! She held us in rapt attention with her singing and
dancing skills, stage presence and, most especially, her obvious joy
in performing.

Excellent performers

Gary Valenciano and Martin Nievera, always excellent performers,
gained extra points when they joined Jasmine Trias in a fresh,
engaging number. Lea gave a touch of class to the proceedings
with "New York State of Mind," a seemingly surprise song choice for
this show.

With her exquisite style, unmatched phrasing and diction and a bit
of jazzy riffing toward the end of the Billy Joel hit, Lea
captivated the audience.

Nora, who sang her old reliable, "People," visibly enjoyed being the
object of song tributes when Vina and Sheryn Regis joined her
onstage and sang "The Impossible Dream" and "The Greatest
Performance of My Life," respectively.

The Superstar, mired in one controversy after another, clarified one
more issue: "Meron po akong working visa." There had been talk that
she couldn't perform as announced because she did not have a permit
to be in the show.

Prior to the main show, US-based comedian Fe delos Reyes
courageously took the stage, solo, for a full hour and made the
oppressive heat a little more bearable for the enthusiastic audience.

ABS-CBN executive Raffy Lopez handed a check of $25,000 to a raffle
winner, Honesto Valencia, a kapamilya-TFC's term for a subscriber to
its cable service. TFC airs ABS-CBN's shows in the US. Another lucky
TFC subscriber won a brand-new Honda Civic.

The Filipinos' joy in watching the show was evident. Everywhere this
reporter turned, there was open-mouthed appreciation of the talents
onstage.

At a dinner in a Pasadena hotel following the show, Gary V summed it
best for Inquirer Entertainment: "I was moved by the faces,
especially from what I could see in front of the stage. When we
signed autographs before the show, they kept saying, 'Thank you for
coming to us!'"

Judy Ann agreed, exclaiming, "I was so happy to see ang dami-daming
Pinoy! Na-appreciate ko talaga that everybody took the time to be
with us."

Biggest crowd

Vina exulted, "Our kababayans were so patient. At iba ang dating
nila! They were so excited!" Rachel likewise expressed excitement
over performing in such a large stadium, an elation shared by many
in the cast. "This is the biggest venue I have played in so far,"
the singer said. Jasmine declared, "This was an entirely different
experience because it was a live show in a stadium." The West Coast
two-city tour, dubbed "Kapamilya Summer Caravan sa America" moves on
to San Francisco on Saturday, July 23, at the Monster Park
Fairgrounds. This time ABS-CBN will bring in the live edition
of "The Buzz," with hosts Boy Abunda and Kris Aquino. David Pomeranz
and Angela Bofill are the special guests.
