Date Posted: 12:06:20 08/02/05 Tue In reply to: Pathfinder 's message, "Re: My $0.01 and the rest of the story" on 23:16:36 08/01/05 Mon Yea, I tossed in a little inflammatory verbiage partially to see if anyone was paying attention. I didn't quite think I'd get called out in the same sentence as "ACA". Ouch. Granted, the rec boats can get'er done. Hell, I started w/ (and still use) a 12.5 ft whitewater boat w/ a homemade front bulkhead. Total cost was ~$275. You can also cross the Straights of Mackinac in an Old Town Otter and probably have fun doing it. Come to think of it, you can hike the AT in steel toe work boots, mountain bike w/ an old school $50 mtn. bike from a garage sale, get to the top of almost any mountain w/o $2000 worth of climbing gear, shoot deer without space-age camo or a tree stand and catch fish w/ a $20 WalMart fishing rod. Actually, you can get to the same camp sites & carry the same gear w/ an '88 Volvo station wagon instead of a Jeep, but would you want to? If you can have better for the same price, why not? And if you can throw some money toward an outfitter or private party instead of Dick's "sporting goods", all the better. If you ID yourself as being in the 'rec' market, then the more power to you. And in the end, I respect a paddler by the heart with which they paddle, not the boat they are paddling. (That's a rare standard these days, and it’s why I paddle w/ FBET & not the aforementioned ACA crowd). My $0.01CAN is that you can get an awful lot for little or no additional cash.
