Meet at the Car pool lot on the intersection of US-131 and M-57 (14 mile rd) at 7:00 pm Sharp on Wednesday, August 11, 2004.

The Convoy leader will be Wapiti and the convoy sweeper will be Papa.

I will be in Canada and the team fragments will rendezvous at Frater Rd. Just off Highway 17 in Lake Superior Provincial Park.

IF YOU WILL BE MEETING THE CONVOY, CONTACT WAPITI AND LET HIM KNOW. IF YOU WILL BE MEETING ME BEFOREHAND AT FRATER ROAD, CONTACT PATHFINDER. Otherwise, good luck finding us.

There will be no specific time to meet at Frater Rd., but I would think the convoy should be arriving at about 1am. If the convoy has no contact with me, find a suitable site and set up a bivouac, I will be along before day break. Kramer will assume the leadership position in my absence, as he is the Expedition Pathfinder. Do not drive more than 1 mile down Frater road if you are meeting us up there. We will rendezvous at the JUNCTION of Frater and Highway 17. Early birds can find a site and set up camp, but return to the junction to meet.

Third,

Since the train will not pass northbound until Friday, team Bravo will spend some time exploring. Ranwick Mine, Montreal Falls, Montreal River Harbor and waterfall, etc. We will catch the train in Frater on Friday. This means the cost for the train (round trip) will be $48.

Team Alpha will leave for base camp on foot on Thursday, by taking the Towab Trail to Agawa Falls camp overnight, then Ascend the Canyon to the tracks and walk to base camp. If you are planning to join team Alpha, prepare for a very strenuous hike. 65 –85 degree grades, rocks, bad knees, etc. and pack light. Team Bravo will take the base camp supplies. The Towab trail is tough. Nothing on the AT or Pacific Rim or North Country trail can compare to it.

Team Bravo will also be hiking most of Thursday, mapping mines, trails, rivers, waterfalls and cliffs. Team Bravo will also board the train at Frater disembark just before the Canyon and set up base camp.

We will need the following items, let me know if you are bringing one.

Camp Chair (but if you want to sit on the ground go ahead, there may be a picnic table there)
One tarp for the Mess Area. (pathfinder will bring, but another 10x10 would be nice)
A foldable (rollup) table (something you can strap on your pack), for the computer equipment.
GPS will Serial port download cable (if you have one)
Emergency Auto battery pack (I will bring one, but one other would help)
Lantern (to light up base camp)
Digital Camera with download cable (waterproof it!!)

That should about do it.

No Sat uplink on this trip, the tech who was going to join us, went to China for some Eco-Challenge thing.

Let me know if you have questions.

Pretty cool stuff, we will have a great time, and (if you choose) will work hard.

By the way, I’m going to stress these individual items again.

Climbing harness (this is truly optional, but if your interested)
Water Shoes (for fording)
Headlamp
Gaiters (lots of bushwhacking)
Extra Batteries
Head net
Earplugs
Gloves
Jacket
Birth Certificate or Passport (Canadian Border Crossing may want you to prove citizenship.)

And at least $70 Canadian. $48 for train (team Alpha will pay $24) and the rest of the $ for the details.

If you think these items will be unnecessary, then GOOD LUCK!!!

Lightweight backpacking is neat and all, but we are not backpacking WE ARE EXPLORING!!

God Speed. I’m looking forward to it!!!

Chuck "Pathfinder" Hayden
