The calibration of the map image is used by the GIS software to figure out where to put things like the GPS data. To calibrate properly you do, as you say, need to know the projection of the map and such like. GeoTIFF files have this info stored directly in the file. I can't just cut and paste a DRG into a mapping program and then have it instantly work. That is where the calibration comes in. Perhaps we're using different terms to talk about the same thing. That wouldn't surprise me. So as for what projection. I don't right now really care. a UTM grid projection (traverse mercator) of the area is fine - let's see that was UTM zone 16T which has standard longitude of -87° and standard latitude of +44°.)
