But, if you need an accurate map then I need to know what GIS and projection you would like. And it is a Reference Overlay not a Calibration. If you remember, it is impossible to have a perfect map, and calibration assumes there is a standard for 0. And actually cut and paste is as accurate (if not more) as your method (remember the backtracks have waypoints), as long as you has the same projections (GPS and Software). Quite honestly, the GeoTIFF method you talk about only helps with copyright, the Softmap and Nat Geo meet USGS and Ministry standards for digital mapping, but you will have inaccuracy by scanning and pasting the for corners of a papermap.
