Hello Wapiti et al. I'm new to the group & haven't been out w/ Fortune Bay on any trips as yet, However, the Soo Locks trip sounds awesome. Please keep me in the loop for the training day(s). I will at least attend those. I'm a little intimidated at the thought of getting onto the big water, especially the COLD big water. But maybe it's a healthy respect that has grown from my prior experiences. I had always presumed that wet suits were a necessity on a trip like this, but I have no first hand experience to confirm this notion.

A little background: I've been on, or led, 5 trips through the BWCA and Slyvania Lakes (all 5-8 days), at least 5 or 6 inland river canoe trips (3-6 days, all in Wisconsin), and I've backpacked more days than I could possibly remember. I have a Dagger Crossover (12.5 ft), that I'm adding a front bulkhead to. I'm comfortable paddling 25+ miles/day @ a brisk pace, but I'm not sure what to make of large waves & cold, open water. I have not learned the eskimo roll or proper bracing technique.

The trip (and group) sounds great. Feel free to discuss it here, or we can chat once you've seen me on the water.

Brian in Lansing
