Date Posted: 14:11:43 01/10/04 Sat In reply to: Chuck Hayden 's message, "Quiz 2" on 01:29:27 01/10/04 Sat There are a couple of thoughts on this... There is archeological evidence of a minor presence by indigenous peoples that goes as far back as 3000 B.C. They were probably summer fishing encampments. We know that native peoples went to the islands from time to time, but the most accepted idea is that the islands provided no special resource they would need, so they stayed to the mainland and the larger islands in the Lake Michigan Archipelago. Probably the biggest factor influencing the lack of indigenous establishment of the island is the abscence of White Taild Deer. it is only in the last 25 years that a permanent population of deer have made the trip accross the ice floes in the winter and are causing major problems. Here is an editorial about it... http://www.leelanaunews.com/editorial.php?id=150 On the side of the indigenous legends, there are a couple. One has to to with the legend of the sleeping bear. There is a legend that a mother bear and two cubs swam accross the big lake to escape a forest fire on the other shore. The mother made the trip and looked back accross to wait for her cubs, who never came. She waited ont he shore for the rest of her life and in tribute to her patience the great indian spirit of the lake raised the islands at the place the cubs drowned. Also, the word manitou implies a secred place that the native people probably did not go. Wow. I killed way too much time on that one. Do I get extra points? ak >2. According to legend, the Manitou Islands remained >uninhabited by indigenous personnel until the arrival >of the Europeans. What is the archeological >(European) reason and how does indigenous Michigan >legend explain this? [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
