For any British/ Australian members who don't have a multi-region DVD. 14 episodes of the Long John Silver TV series are available on DVD Region 1, from a budget label in the UK. Here's info from Amazon UK.

No they're the same episodes that Platinum have released in the States.

Synopsis
Straight out of the book 'Treasure Island' comes the character known as Long John Silver. Join him in his serial debut. Also includes: 'The Necklace', 'Pieces of Eight', 'The Orphan's Christmas', 'The Execution Dock', 'The Eviction', 'The Pink Pearl', 'The Tale Of The Tooth', 'Ship Of The Dead', 'Sword Of Vengeance', 'Turnabout', 'Miss Purity's Birthday', 'Dead Reckoning', ' Devil's Stew' and 'Dragon Slayer'.

Incidentally if you have a multi-region DVD and an account with Amazon.com you can order this British set via Amazon.co.uk

I was just checking online & "Dragon Slayer" is
not listed on the Platinum set. Eveything else
appears the same, even the order of the episodes is the
same.

Have just received the British Region 2 set. It does have Dragon Slayer which is not on the American Region 1 set.

This release, by Elstree Hill Entertainment, is more consistent, quality wise, than the Region 1 (Platinum) release, in spite of the large black border around the picture. Most of my Region 2 DVDs (which I can play only on my PC thanks to a download addition) yield larger snappys (screen captures) than the Region 1 ones, but by the time I have removed the black border, the resulting pic is just about the same size as the Patinum ones.

The color is not as vivid as most of the Platinum episodes, but some of the Platinum ones are oversaturated, and a few are extremely pale and washed out. The Elstree ones are pretty consistent throughout.

I don't care for the packaging, though. My volume 4 won't stay in place; I have to be pretty careful not to knock it loose, and by contrast, my volume 2 is extremely hard to get out. I'm seriously thinking about doing single cases for the 5 volumes.

BTW, the title is "Long John Silver", not "Adventures of Long John Silver", and the Elstree Hill version of LJS Returns to TI is ALSO named simply "Long John Silver". Pretty confusing, IMHO. It took me a while to find it on Amazon UK, and Play.com won't ship to the US.

While I am at it, the Elstree LJS Returns ALSO has the large black border, and the picture is jerky throughout. It may be my software, but all my OTHER Region 2 DVDs play just fine for me.

Amazon UK offers a deal if you buy both the series and the movie together, but the movie is not worth it, so skip it, and find a different release of 'Return' instead.

Forgot to mention: The Elstree episodes are also more consistent as to actual running time; each ep is between 26 and 26 1/2 minutes long, where some of the Platinum ones are a couple of minutes less, and the ending credits on one of the Platinum eps is from a different ep altogether.

I have not, YET, tried to run them at the same time, like I did with my versions of Jamaica Inn, but the running time tells a tale by itself.

Eva.

This link will demonstrate what I refer to as the 'black border' on the Elstree DVDs.

http://images19.fotki.com/v359/photos/1/102140/4236888/black-vi.jpg

Hopefully it will work.

Stuart,
Which episodes are these? Not that this would help me because I am in the US, but are they the remaining episodes that we were trying to locate earlier? If they are, then they may be released soon in the US.

Great find! Thanks, matey! You know, I already had a link to the Classic Australian Television site on my filmography page, but I hadn't checked it in a very long time, obviously, and they've greatly expanded it since then! They've also moved the site, so I need to update my link. (And add it to my LJS page, which for some reason I hadn't done before.) Some great information there, including descriptions of the as-yet unreleased episodes. And also the speculation that Robert Newton himself had a hand in writing some of those great lines for himself!

Actually it's just the usual 14 episodes, not
the whole series.

I looked at their catalog. http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/dvd.cfm?itemID=DIR021629

It lists 6 episodes, not 14. Where did you find the 14?

Interesting. No wonder I couldn't find it; Robert Newton seems to have changed his name <grin>. And Jim Hawkins is LJS's SON?

Do you know if the picture/sound quality is acceptable?

I'm not sure on the quality, I don't have it, at least not yet. It's from Delta Entertainment. I wouldn't be suprised if
they just copied one of the other DVD releases.

I'm trying to verify the exact wording of some favorite lines of dialog sent in for inclusion on the site, and we can't seem to remember which episode they came from. Does anybody happen to know where this exchange can be found?

JIM: How do you spell "Excellent"?
LJS: Arr, let me see, E-X-S-E...
JIM: Are you sure it's an S? I thought it was E-X-C.
LJS: No, no, there definitely be an S in there somewhere. 'Ere, why don't 'ee just scrub it out and write "good"?!

Hee ...

I thought it might be "Dead Reckoning," but it wasn't--although the Platinum DVD version quality of that episode is pretty bad, with a lot of "skips," so maybe there was something missing--nor was it "Tale of a Tooth." (That narrows it down to only 12, which alas I don't have time to watch at the moment. Well, actually 10, since there are two episodes that Jim's not in.) I read through the Classic Australian TV episode guide for clues, but still nothing's clicking.

But I may have an excuse to watch them all soon--guess what my nieces are getting for Christmas! (Shh, don't tell them!) I figure if they liked RN in Treasure Island in spite of all the violence, they'll really love the warm-and-fuzzy TV series. :-) (Hope they don't notice that Jim Hawkins has changed even more significantly than Long John. They really liked Bobby Driscoll!) Anyway, I'm looking forward to watching that with them now instead of Dora the Explorer. (Can't wait till they're ready for SpongeBob ... ar-ar-ar-ar-ar.)

Darn, reading about all those unreleased episodes really makes you want to see them, doesn't it? I wonder if they'll ever be released in our lifetimes!

Anyway, if anybody can help, I thank ee kindly!

'The Eviction'. And don't give me credit for a wonderful memory because while I did remember the conversation I couldn't remember the episode. What I did remember is that Jim was doing homework sitting next to Long John and that it was at the beginning of the episode. So I just played the beginning of each episode (and forgot which ones you said that Jim was not in). Of course, it had to be the 12th one that I played (and as we all know there are only 13 on the Platinum Disc set)!

Thanks, Sue! I had a feeling you'd come through! (Actually, you have a better memory than I do--at least you knew it was at the beginning of an episode!)

I've added the quote to the "Great Lines" page, thanks to Sue and contributor Spev ... along with a bit more of the scene, which I thought was cute. (In fact, it's one of my favorite episodes ... It's the one where RN makes that great facial expression--twice!--after realizing he's just invited Purity to live aboard the Faithful!)

Unfortunately, party-pooper that I am, I found two things technically wrong with that little exchange of dialogue, one literary, one historical: The one that really bothered me is that, not only is Long John suddenly cuddly and lovable with no trace of his scheming, self-serving, murdering side (OK, so he turned over a new leaf; that I can't complain about), but now he's suddenly lost a number of IQ points as well? According to Stevenson, LJS was well educated: "'He's no common man, Barbecue,' said the coxswain to me. 'He had good schooling in his young days and can speak like a book when so minded; and brave--a lion's nothing alongside of Long John! ...'" (His education is re-emphasized in Bjorn Larsson's totally ingenious "Long John Silver" pseudo-autobiography, which I can't recommend highly enough--for mature readers, that is.) The other thing is, was proper spelling really part of one's education at that time? Until Samuel Johnson published the first English dictionary in 1755, there was no standardized spelling. And that's probably right around the time Treasure Island takes place. (The actual "Golden Age of Piracy" in the Caribbean ended about 1724.) Would dictionaries have already been widely distributed and in popular use, especially all the way to (fictional) Caribbean islands, by that time? (Not to mention the fact that the word "excellent" was certainly in common use as far back as 1382! Then again, whether it was used in ships' logs to describe the weather, the OED doesn't say.)

One thing *was* historically accurate though: Like a real-life democratic pirate captain, Long John puts the spelling issue to a vote among the crew! :-
