Happy Robert Newton Day! It's that time of year again ... Robert Newton would have been 101 years old tomorrow (well, actually in just a couple of minutes in this time zone). One way we can celebrate is to talk about some of his movies. What was the last Robert Newton movie you watched, and what did you think of it? (Can't remember? Pop one in the video player right now!) I caught "Desert Rats" on AMC the other night. (For a moment, I thought they might have been showing it in honor of Robert Newton's upcoming birthday, but then I realized it was part of a WWII movie marathon in honor of Memorial Day. What do you say next year we deluge TCM well in advance with requests for a RN marathon on his actual birthday?) Of course, I've seen it before, so I had it on in the background whilst puttering around the house, but I was struck once again by the easy-going warmth and quiet wisdom of his performance. (I also found him especially handsome in that film.) BTW, I may be imagining things, but has anybody else noticed a distinct similarity between the exchanges between him and Richard Burton in the cave scenes and an old Monty Python sketch on the "Matching Tie and Handkerchief" album; I believe it's called "World War Noises in 4"? (It's so old I only have it on 8-track!) The dialog doesn't quite match up, but the auditory effects are so alike I've always suspected it was a spoof of "Desert Rats"!
Also to commemorate this special occasion, I've spent the last two days creating a new page for the site with photos and information about the movie "Night Boat to Dublin" (www.mooncove.com/newton/nightboat.htm). Hope you enjoy it!

Happy Birthday to Robert Newton. Wish he was still with us (at least I wish he had been with us longer than he was--I realize it would have been quite an accomplishment to live to 101!). I did see 'Desert Rats' the other day on AMC (at least I got to see part of it--near the end). I have recently watched 'Farewell Again' and 'The Derelicts'. I just got a copy of 'Farewell Again'. Very briefly, the plot involves a 6 hour leave granted to British servicemen aboard a ship following a tour of duty in India. Of course, they all have some domestic issue awaiting them at home. RN's concern is whether the girlfriend that he left behind is waiting for him on his return. The movie is 'dated' and a little hard to pay complete attention to in today's world but it was worth it to see RN again(handsome too).
I would like to see some network do a Robert Newton marathon. It seems they do John Wayne, Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart, etc... why not Robert Newton??? Oh, and Susan, I like the 'Night Boat to Dublin' page. Really nice.
Everyone take care and keep the Newton flame burning.
I know this post is late, but I've been experiencing quite a bit of problems with my ISP over the last month. I would like to offer everyone belated Robert Newton birthday wishes. As Sue G. stated, I wish he was still here with us. His contributions to film and his legendary acting will always be remembered.
Recently, I watched "Around the World in 80 Days." I loved the way R.N. played the role of Detective Fix.
