Hi everyone!

About a month or so ago, I purchased "Jamaica Inn" on DVD off of Ebay. I really enjoyed the movie and I was wondering if there were any other of Robert Newton's movies out on DVD? If I'm not mistaken, "Desert Rats" is available on DVD, but I wasn't for sure if there were others.

Thanks for any information!

Your friend,
Trisha :)

Hi, Trisha,

Nice to hear from you again. Yes, I've seen several RN movies on DVD, but not having a DVD player, I haven't paid much attention to which ones are available. A quick search on Amazon.com reveals that at least the following are on DVD:

Oliver Twist
Desert Rats
Henry V
Odd Man Out
Fire Over England

... and--woo hoo!--it's not out yet, but they're accepting pre-orders for the long-out-of-circulation High and the Mighty! Finally! That might just be the incentive I need to buy me one o' them newfangled contraptions. Anyway, if you call up High and the Mighty on Amazon, you can submit your e-mail address, and they'll e-mail you when it becomes available. They say the studio is waiting to find out how many people are interested before they release it, so be sure to let them know!

BTW, it seems to me This Happy Breed was available on DVD sometime ago, but maybe it's gone out of print already. Anybody remember seeing it?

I double checked on the IMDb and found that Treasure Island is also available on DVD in the U.K. and Germany (not in the U.S.), and This Happy Breed is on DVD in Germany.

I just bought the Legendary Pirate Movies on dvd at my local Borders store today. I paid only $10.99 for it. It's got three movies on it - LJS's Return To Treasure Island, Captain Kidd and The Son Of Monte Cristo. It's the first time that I have ever seen Return To Treasure Island on dvd.

Hi Jay!

That's great! I've been wanting LJS on DVD for quite some time, not to mention the rest of RN's films.

Thanks for the info!

Your friend,
Trisha :)

I just heard Around the World in 80 Days is out on DVD now, and it includes audio commentary, "featurettes" (??), outtakes, photos, and trailers. I hope it's in widescreen too. Anybody know? If you buy a copy, please let us know if Robert Newton is included in any of the extras.

Also, has anybody seen the new remake? Just wondering how it compares. (I heard it didn't get good reviews.)

I bought a copy of 'Around the World' and it does have outtakes features which do include Robert Newton. However, all of the outtakes are not with dialogue and have music playing throughout. So some of them were kind of hard to figure why they were being redone. I really do not know why they did it that way. It would have been nice to hear what actually took place. It also has some footage of the premier of the movie and comments by Michael Todd and Elizabeth Taylor after the Academy Awards ceremony. However, I believe that Robert Newton had probably passed away by the time the movie premiered (very sad). It also has footage of Michael Todd's big (I think it was) 1 year premier party of the movie. Very extravagant! There are other features also including a commentary.
It is a very nice version of the movie and I would recommend getting it. It is rather inexpensive (I believe I paid $19.95 at Best Buys)and a nice addition to your DVD and Robert Newton collection.

I spent the day, hiding from the heat, and watching episodes of "The Adventures of Long John Silver" I just love Robert Newton! His work has been great in every film genre, especially the swashbucklers. I'm glad he is still being remembered by so many people....Mr.Shreek "Black Sky Cinema"
