I went to a high school that was considered "inner city." If you are a good teacher, students won't have other reason to judge you. If there is still a barrier, find a common ground with your students and then guide them in the direction you want them to go. In that sense, its like the constructivism theory- start where they are (whether its a common ground in culture, or knowledge they already have about music).

Depending on the ages of the children you plan on teaching, you may not have any problems dealing with racial differences. Children, especially young children, ignore race and see people as people. As we get older, we stop seeing similarities and begin to see and react to differences. What age group were you planning on teaching?
