I can understand why a director might want students to audition before their peers: to judge if the student(s) can handle the pressure of performing at a concert where there will be many other people. However, auditioning on a piece that one may not be comfortable on, especially in front of the ensemble, is pretty intimidating. Instead of having the choir decide on who gets the solo, I think it should be solely decided on by the director. If he or she wants additional views, perhaps other directors could help. I do not think that all of the students would have enough responsibility to make such decisions.

i like the way my high school directors did it. We auditioned in front of the group so everyone auditioning could hear their ompetition and know that the person getting the solo deserved it and also so we knew the person could handle the pressure of singign inf front of an audience. My director then decided who got the solo's based on both talent and stage presence.
