I think that the auditions should be held in front of the group because it will allow the soloists a chance to perform in front of a group of people and give them experience in that department. However, I believe that the decision of who gets the solo should lie completely on the director.

I think that it is okay to have a solo audition in front of the choir because the person is going to be singing in front of more than just the choir at the performance. But I have never heard of the students getting a say in who gets a solo. That isn't right. The teacher is the one in charge and should decide.
