I think there should be auditions for solos. In some choirs I've been in the director would just give a student a solo and nobody would know there even was a solo until the night of the concert. It made some of the rest of us feel like we weren't good enough. I know I personally though, "what's wrong with the rest of us?" "Aren't we good enough for a solo" I think it seems like you have favorites if you give someone a solo without auditions.

Holding auditions for solos is a great way to get the students involved. If you dont hold auditions and give someone the solo, some students might not like the teacher anymore and not try as hard in class. Its also good to see if the voice/instrument really fits the color you are truly looking for that particular piece.
