Subject: Choosing soloists

If you choose a choral song that has a small solo line within it, and when you choose this piece, you have a particular person's voice in mind... should you still hold auditions? Even if you KNOW who you are going to pick?

A choir director I had in the past did not audition solos and when I did my senior internship last spring, my mentor DID audition all the solos despite the fact that he knew who's voice he wanted on the solo....

What do you guys think??

I think it is a good idea to hold auditions. What if there is a voice in your choir that decides to come out of it's shell this year. I think it is a good idea to be fair with students!

It is extremely important to hold auditions. If not, students will not be happy. At least this way you are giving everyone their fair chance. I would also suggest keeping an open mind. Sometimes you should give solos to someone that never gets them even though you had a person in mind. It could make all the difference to them.

After re-reading the posts on this topic, I thought of another point... Is it more important to give the solo to the person who performs it BEST or is it more important to share the educational opportunity by giving it to different people each time??

I think Nickie, that the solos should NOT be given to the same two people each time. Let other students share in the joy of musical expression. By letting other students perform the solos, maybe you will inspire a student to become a better musician!

I think there should be auditions for solos. In some choirs I've been in the director would just give a student a solo and nobody would know there even was a solo until the night of the concert. It made some of the rest of us feel like we weren't good enough. I know I personally though, "what's wrong with the rest of us?" "Aren't we good enough for a solo" I think it seems like you have favorites if you give someone a solo without auditions.

Holding auditions for solos is a great way to get the students involved. If you dont hold auditions and give someone the solo, some students might not like the teacher anymore and not try as hard in class. Its also good to see if the voice/instrument really fits the color you are truly looking for that particular piece.

I agree with several others when I say that you should hold auditions. We do often have a particular soloist in mind, however we must go through the motions for two reasons 1) fairness to each and every interested student, and 2) you may have a student who really surprises you!!

I think you should still hold auditions, if there is someone better out there and you didnt know you may discover them and that would be cool. I dont think its right to go in a know who you want to do the solo because then you are ruling out other people who are talented.
