Holding auditions for solos is a great way to get the students involved. If you dont hold auditions and give someone the solo, some students might not like the teacher anymore and not try as hard in class. Its also good to see if the voice/instrument really fits the color you are truly looking for that particular piece.

I agree with several others when I say that you should hold auditions. We do often have a particular soloist in mind, however we must go through the motions for two reasons 1) fairness to each and every interested student, and 2) you may have a student who really surprises you!!
