Subject: No More Music?

Anyone who is in Dr. Cook's voice class has heard from him that one of the levies in Tiffin did not pass. Because of this, Tiffin City Schools Board of Education has proposed a $1.2 million deficit in FY 2006. What does this mean? Well, the Tiffin City Schools will have to cut extracurricular activities. Guess who come first? Yes, that's right, the music programs. Although the Board of Education says they take in consideration all extracurricular activities (which they all say), the music area, such as Jazz band, Pep band, and even general music could be cut 7-12 grade. As well as cuts, they might even has to close 2 elementary schools. These more serious cuts will be enacted July 2006 if the August or November levy fails.
Being music TEACHERS we need to support what we do whether we're apart this district or not. A lot of you might teach in one of the schools. How would you feel if you could no longer student teach there because of the failed levy. I think we, as future teachers, can help the Tiffin City School District by showing that we support the levy. Of all people why would we want the music programs in the public schools to be no more. Please let me know what you think about this and if you think we, as supporters of music in the classroom, should help. Thanks!!

Great Idea, but, besides simply spreading the word, how do you propose we do this? Do you have a way to get some of us to the Board meeting? or is there something else you'd like us to do to show the public that we're taking action?

There will be a school board meeting on Tuesday, March 30 at 7pm. It will be held at the Tiffin Middle School. I am very interested in going if anyone else wants to join me. The meeting is open to the public and they are asking for public imput on the proposed budget reductions. I do have 2 news articles I can email you if you would like to read them. Let me know if you want to come!
I'm not sure exactly what I want to do with this situation yet. Maybe we can get some questions answered at the Board Meeting...we won't know what's really going on unless we go ourselves. If you have any other imput let me know! Thanks

This is a travesty! As music educators we have as much rights to funding as a football team does! It is not merely music in which the levies kill, it is the opportunity to become more creative, diverse individuals. Music should not be on the chopping block when it comes to levies not passing. We have as much right to remain as that of sports. If we don't get to teach because of this, we might not be able to continue in Music Education. We should do something to get funding...possibly a petition. I don't know anything in particular, but we can't have this abomination occur!
