Subject: Praxis I?

I am wondering what exactly to expect on the Praxis I... I've heard some pretty scary horror stories about this test and I'm starting to get nervous! When will I have to take it, what will be on it, how long is it?... I could really use some answers from those of you who have taken it recently! Thanks!!

I don't know many people who have had to take the Praxis I. It is only required if you've received less than a 21 on the ACT. That's about all I know about it. I could tell you what to expect from the PLT on the Praxis II if you would like to know.

Any information anyone could give me on any of the Praxis tests would be helpful :o)

Praxis I is like an adult ACT test. That's all it is. The one you should worry about is the PLT.

I suspect that it's really the Praxis II (PLT) test that you have heard stories about, Nickie. Even for that, the passing rate is high for Heidelberg music students. I don't have exact numbers, but I would say that a majority pass it on the first try and almost everyone passes it by the second try. You just want to pay attention and do the work in your EDU/EIS and Music Ed courses.

Secondly, your chances of passing it on the first try correlate pretty strongly with your performance on the ACT/SAT test in high school. In fact, that's true for most standardized tests. If you did well on the high school-level tests, you'll probably do equally well on the PLT. If your score was below average (national mean on the ACT is around 21 composite), then it will probably take you longer to pass the PLT. There are study materials and test preparation materials available on the internet. Does anyone know the address of the website offhand?
Dr.O.

From my experience with the PLT, I felt that the music ed. majors were somewhat at a disadvantage because we take less education classes than the regular education majors that take the test. EDU 200 (Growth & Development) in my opinion, has the most information that they test on- Theorists and their beliefs, etc. Another big one is EIS 265, but make sure to find a study guide because I felt *very* underprepared for the sections on special-learners, ESL students, and how to deal with handicaps. According to education majors, they learn more about these issues in another class that we don't take. Unfair? Probably, but it's nothing we can't handle without a little studying :)
