Subject: Preparing for concerts

If you are preparing for a concert with your ensemble and when it comes down to the week of the concert and your students are still not getting the pieces correct. Do you cut out certain songs from your program and focus on making those select few really good or do you work on everything and have a lot of songs that are just mediocre?

The answer to this is simple: Your students should have the pieces prepared before the week of the concert. If the teacher has properly planned and scheduled all of the rehearsals, there should be no doubt that the ensemble will be ready. I believe one of the hardest parts about what we do is just timing. You want your students to feel well prepared for a concert, but you don't want them to be over-prepared. That is, you don't want their "peak of preparation" to come two weeks before the scheduled concert because then they will lose momentum. In those two weeks, much can be lost. Timing is everything. My answer to your question is that if the teacher is well prepared, this situation won't come about. :)

I also agree with Nickie that if the teacher has used rehersal time efficiently the songs will be prepared. At my high school we used music, but if you dont agree with using music maybe on that certain song you could use music. It is really embarassing to cut songs from a program, and maybe you should let the students perform the song and become embarresed so they will work harder the next time.

I agree with what Nickie said about planning and timing of preparedness for the songs. Although if this proper planning does occur I feel that it is best to not subject the students to performing songs that are not ready. If they can perform the songs with music I would allow them to use their music, but if they are just completely unready to perform the songs on the concert, I would take them out altogether.

I would never allow my ensemble to perform an unprepared piece in order to teach them a lesson. Isn't that unethical?

I agree with the above statements that timing is everything. My high school band came to a point when we had to cut one of our pieces and it was really embarassing that we couldn't perform a piece because we weren't prepared enough.

As much as time management is critical, I believe that sometimes things just do not go according to plan. As teachers, we need to be flexible with adversity and have a backup procedure in place. I would recommend watering down parts as needed and not excluding pieces unless absolutely necessary. Perhaps meeting earlier on the night of the performance would also help improve security. It is not something we want to do, but it is a reasonable alternative to either playing something terrible "as is" or playing something decent watered down or taken at a slower tempo.

As said above I would have a very difficult time putting an ensemble on stage if they were no ready. But also I agree that If a teacher prepares enough then you will probably ready for the concert by the time you get to the 1 week left period.

I agree with what has been said previously. If this does happen, I think students should not be put through embarrassment, because that could be detrimental to them. You should cut the songs they are not ready for and focus on the songs they are ready for. This way they will do good, but should feel bad that they did all the work for the songs they didn't end up doing.

I agree that the students need to have the music known beforehand, and that if they dont know all the songs, then some need to be cut out and just work on a couple to make them really good... At the same time though, I would like to pose the question, if the teacher has been harping on the students to learn the pieces since the beginning of the year, should the teacher let the students go out with at least one piece that they dont have prepared to teach them a lesson? Because sometimes, not everything can be just told... they have to be experienced...
