Subject: Helping Jason with maths

I am working with an eight-year old by, Jason, who seems to be completely confused when it comes to maths. He can add up, but has no idea what to do when it comes to taking away / subtraction. It's like a foreign language to him.

I have never had any trouble with maths myself, and I find it puzzling that he should be experiencing such difficulty over simple sums like 20 - 13. He can count small sums on his fingers (8 - 5), but this method seems to be of no help when it comes to larger numbers. Can anyone give me some ideas? It'll be much appreciated.

(I'm a classroom assistant working with two boys in the same school in Hertfordshire, England.)
