Hi I am employed in a PMLD school with an eclectic mix of pupils ranging from multiple and complex physical and medical issues to emotional and behavioral disorders, pupils with fascinating syndromes and rare disorders and we also have pupils whom are sit in all areas of the autisitc spectrum. The first thing I wish to point out is that before any individual can help a child they must firstly be aware and have an understanding of the individuals circumstances and their individual needs. This is the schools responsibility to inform you of any relevent but maybe not all information about the child. You need to be aware that in order for you to do your job effectively and efficiently whilst keeping this pupil happy, healthy and safe and minimising the risks to others around you. You cannot manage this pupil alone it needs the school team including yourself whilst working along side a multi disceplinery team to ensure this pupil achieves ALL of the ECM 5 outcomes. If I were you I would firstly point out that this pupil and yourself are achieving and learning NOTHING whilst you are employed to watch over them. The only thing Iam aware of that we watch over are STARS! Secondly the school needs expert input on how to manage this pupils behaviour and the statement to see if the behaviour is part of a diagnosis or condition. The next thing I would be doing , which you can do as an individual is look for patterns in the behaviour note the times of day and any possible triggers, ie it could be only certain pupils, getting attention, manipulsting situations and as you said getting what they want, trust me there will be something! After that you are looking to distract the pupil from getting into crisis by maybe allwing them a favourite toy or set up a reward system for morning lunch and afternoon breaks. SPLIT THE DAY UP INTO SECTIONS am lunch and pm. Whilst all this is going on I would advise a behaviour management plan be set up. This containing all relevent information such as patterns, triggers and the successful methods used to manange them ie reward, distraction or the concequences. One thing I have learned about behaviour management no matter how challenging or severe. CONSISTENCY IS PARAMOUNT AND PRIORITY. All staff including the teacher needs to be saying , doing and following the same structure.
