The rider, Weyring, crossed to her dragonet, feeding the hatchling a large fish she had recently caught from the lake. She smiled, patting the young dragon before settling next to her and pulling out her oil cloth. The dragonet lay her head across the rider's lap, anxious for her scales to be rubbed. In a few days, maybe a little over a week, the Dragon Growth would occur, and the 7 feet long dragonets [from tail to tip] would grow to the next stage, Lairster, at a whopping 20 feet in length. Then their combat training would begin, for both rider and dragon. It was only when they had reached 25 feet that the rider would be allowed to ride the dragon, which usually occured between 8mths and 12mths. She smiled and began to rub the cracking skin of the dragonet, smoothing the growing ridges.
