1. ASIA BIRD FLU HITS INDONESIA—JAN 25, 2004
So far eight countries in Asia have been struck by the bird flu. Indonesia has recently admitted to the disease’s presence in the country. In Asia, over one billion chickens have been killed to prevent spreading this disease. In Indonesia, over the past few months, more that 1 million chickens died from this disease. However it has not showed evidence of being contagious through human-to-human contact. Since it is found in developing countries, WHO has encouraged cheap medicines, but this disease is resistant to anti-viral drugs that fight influenza. This has affected many people, and their chickens. Thailand, the world’s fourth largest chicken industry, has been ruined by this outbreak. There are many precautions being taken to prevent this disease, and spokespeople from WHO have continued to search for new treatments or cures.

2. MARRIOTT ATTACK ‘TARGETED U.S.’—JAN 26, 2004
Recently, a suspected Islamic militant has told the court that Americans were the targets of the attack on the Marriott hotel in Jakarta last August. Mohammad Rais has been accused of hiring the suicide bomber, and he has admitted his part because he feels the need to confess when Indonesians were killed. He regrets killing mostly Indonesians. Twelve people died in the attack, over 150 were injured. An indictment from court says two more suspects, Malaysians Azahari Husin and Noordin Mohammad Top were introduced to Asmar Latin Sani, who carried out the bombing, in January 2003. This indictment also states that Mr. Rais had used a large supply of potassium chlorate for the bombing. These three men have been accused of being a part of Jemaah Islamiah militant Islamic group, which several governments have linked to Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaeda.

3. GREENPEACE ON A CAMPAIGN TO SAVE INDONESIAN FOREST—JAN 21, 2004
Greenpeace’s flagship, the "Rainbow Warrior," arrived in Jakartra on the 20th of January, on a campaign to stop illegal logging in Indonesia.
Steve Campbell, a campaigner for the group, said the ship was on an Asia-Pacific environmental campaign and would sail for unspecified waters in Indonesia Saturday, details of the trip’s length or campaign were not given. Walhi, a local environmental group, said it would join the effort against illegal logging. After Brazil and the Congo, Indonesia has the third largest tropical forests in the world, and deforestation is considered the most serious environmental threat against Indonesia. Exploiting of Indonesia’s forests began in the 1970s, when wood-processing industries developed. It now produces tropical hardwood logs, sawn wood, plywood, pulp for paper, etc.
4. 6 INDONESIANS BARRED FROM U.S.—JAN 16, 2004
5. ORANG-UTANS ‘MAY DIE OUT BY 2005’—JAN 12, 2004
