I'm sorry it took me longer to get back than I meant it to! I've meant to come back a bunch of times since the other day to add some more promised thoughts. :)
Meanwhile...my praise for your writing could never be undeserved or overstated, only the opposite because "you...you're the one who's good with the words" (Todd-ism blast from the past *g*)...mine often don't fit just what I want to say, or how much I feel when I read your writing.
To start with, I wanted to pass on some Mom-isms to you...I printed this piece out to read since I was 'on the go' when I first saw it posted, and I found her (nosy, I told ya ;)) reading it this morning with the same tears in her eyes that I'd had in mine. She wanted me to pass on a few thoughts to you...
She says: "Heather, this isn't just good, it's marvelous...beautifully written and expressed...you are truly talented writer, and I wonder if you know how much so!" She said it gave her a lot to think about, and brought up memories of similar times and feelings for her in regards to her childhood and her family in the post-war era, when times were tough and they weren't so well off financially and that made for a sense of 'unsure' in many ways. She says she hopes that you'll pursue your writing, and that she can see the publishers wanting to snap this one up. :) We talked about it several times that day because it stayed on her mind.
I'm still chasing around my thoughts and trying to put the words to them...a primary thought that is right at the forefront is this:
What I really love and wanted to come back to say is that this piece proves that things that can hold you down or 'silence your voice' can bring their own affect, one we should think about more often to work to make needed changes, but I think it also says that they won't ultimately win; they already haven't. 'Cause Heather-gal, your voice here is as powerful, intelligent, eloquent, and affecting as they come. You have so much to say, and the most beautiful yet powerful way of saying it...so even where situations and attitudes might try to say otherwise, know those are things beaten down a little more with every step you take, and with and in every way that you are who you are.
I have the honor of knowing you and calling you friend, so I know that its all of those things that would hold you down and make you feel lesser that are lesser, and obviously so, you prove that just in who you are. It's not you that doesn't belong in an elite school, its any view that could know you and still act like its better than you. Whether we're talking heart, courage, how hard you work, intelligence, how you are to others...you've got it all over them in spades, kid! And no matter what anyone who doesn't know better might say or exude, it's your family that's rich in the ways that mean the most.
