Subject: Me and my baby on the porch in a storm

It broke as we were three houses away from home, the drops coming down thick and fat. Though so warm that they felt good against my overheated skin, their force still startled, like a kick in the bed at night. I broke into a jog to get Cat in out of the rain. She held onto the edge of her carriage as we bounced down the cracked sidewalk.

When we got to the house, I carried the carriage up the steps and under the roof of the swing porch. I frowned as I undid the straps and saw Cat's wet legs -- we'd have to go out into the rain again to get to the front door. I picked her up and set her on my hip as I thought about what to do.

She made my decision for me.

As the rain changed into a torrent, Cat smiled for the first time since she got a cold days before. She raised her head and looked around with interest. I decided to stay out a bit longer. I do love a storm.

The rain was like a waving curtain, no longer distinguishable into separate drops. Thunder cracked beyond the rooftops. The trees waved their branches. And my daughter? Cat waved back, kicking her feet rapidly against my thigh. She didn't seem to notice the thunder, just watched the rain stream by.

Then a wind blew across the porch, carrying the feel of the rain beyond. I felt the cool droplets on my face and turned to see what my baby thought.

She was watching the storm with a look I thought reserved for me. Pure adoration. When the wind came again, she opened her arms wide, pulled her head back and shrieked with laughter. I couldn't help but join in.

We all look for clues as to what our children are going to be like in the future. Well, I think I've got mine.

I see wonderfully un-clear skies ahead.
