yes, you have to compete to move up levels. When you first begin, you are in the beginner stage. Once you place ( 1, 2, or 3) in all of the dances, you move up to the next level (advanced beginner) the same rule applies for this level. To get out of novice, you have to place first in all of your dances. Then to get out of open solo, you have to place first twice in each dance. When in preliminary, you just have to place first overall twice. You are then in Open championship and there you saty!
