I think most DC5 fans make the rounds of boards and groups and are aware of Ron Ryan's claims that he wrote some of the Dave Clark Five's biggest hit songs. He claims the songs were taken from him, with someone else taking credit (and royalty payments) for their composition.

I'm absolutely serious when I say this.

If you in fact wrote those DC5 songs and can document that you did, why are you on a message board talking about it to a few hundred people?

Take your story to the press. There's a window of opportunity right now because of the Hall of Fame. People are paying attention to the DC5 for the first time in decades. Tell them your story. It's not a question of causing trouble for anyone, but rather getting credit for work you created. It would eat me alive if I were in that situation.

It's a compelling story for the press: here's a person who helped this band achieve their fame but no one knows he did. There's no credit on the records, no royalty checks. Obvuously you need to come up with proof. Tell the story to someone who can print or broadcast it. Speak now, or be forever frustrated.

Clark will pay tribute to his late band mates Mike and Denis.

It looks like the promised release of the back catalogue is going to be the UK "Glad all Over Again" ( or very similar) but with a couple of unreleased tracks.
Titled "The Dave Clark Five: The Hits" it is available at iTunes with a retail release following soon. The 28-track collection includes the unreleased "Every American Citizen" and "Universal Love", plus a 28-page booklet with a biography, discography and rare photos.

As we approach the DC5 induction next week I've been playing a lot of DC5 music in recent days. Most songs were of course boy loves girl, girl loves boy, boy loses girl etc. All very much of its time, and timeless as well. Any particular lyrics of Mikes (or Lenny or Denis') that have special thoughts or memories for any of us. One I had kind of forgotten about, an album track "I love you no more"
I like the line,

I can't help believing that many people in the world have missed out on one of the unique voices in rock and roll history. We are, on this board, prejudiced, of course. But Mike Smith had an unmistakeable voice that was strong and exciting. Not wanting to take away from the other four members in any way, I still think Mike Smith was the voice of the Dave Clark Five.

What a shame the music isn't available for everyone to at least taste and see how good was the music of the Dave Clark Five. Sure, you can hear a few of their tunes still being played on oldies stations. But will probably never hear...."Don't You Realize," "Remember Its Me," "I Love You No More," "I'll Be Yours My Love," and many others.

As expected, the DC5 or DC3 will not perform at the induction, instead a medley of their songs will be performed by Joan Jett. There is of course a chance that Len and/or Rick may jam at some time during the event.

Anyone know anything about this?

My 15 year old nephew did something for my brother. Somehow, someway, like maybe on something like WinMX (is that even still around?) he found some DC5 albums and burned them for my brother. That isn't really hard to do now a days, considering all the Rock 'N' Beat discs and the Russian/Czech discs and the Russian Complete History CD-ROM with the mp3 files.

However, here is the part that blew my mind, somehow, someway, without knowing anything by the DC5, except maybe the stuff the Ramones covered, Keenan, said nephew, downloaded a STEREO VERSION OF SESSION WITH THE DAVE CLARK FIVE! An entire complete intact album of it all in order!

It sounds like it was done by the same parties that did the 2 or three singles that were made "Stereo". I can't remember what they are and who did them as they are on an old PC that died on me.

I am contacting JB directly, but want to know if anyone knows anything about this.

Paul had the band play "Because" for one break song, and "Glad All Over" for another.

After the second, the dialog between Dave and Paul went like this:

Dave: "'Glad All Over,' the Dave Clark Five....before that, 'Because,' the Dave Clark Five. Your friend, keyboardist, lead singer of the Dave Clark Five..."

Paul: "Inspiration, really. Keyboardist of the Dave Clark Five, Mike Smith, passed away today. A great contribution he made. About to be inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, the Dave Clark Five will be inducted on March 10, so he almost made it. He went out knowing he's in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, Mike Smith."

It was great to see the posting on Mike Smith's web site where he shows pictures of the Bruce Springsteen concert in London he attended. What a class 'act' is Bruce to show such reverance to the great Mike Smith. The pictures and story line were terrific, there was even a picture with Charlie, Mike and DC...Sounds like Mike is making plans to attend the HOF induction ceremonies in NYC...BTW I called the Waldorf Astoria and was told that the ceremony is a 'Private' affair and tickets are only available only by invitation through the RHOF...In any case makes you wonder who will represent the DC 5 music?? Hope all works out well for Mike and he is able to be present. Carlos

NME News Story In UK-Rock Hall -- Lynn, 14:05:21 02/26/08 Tue [3]
Justin Timberlake will induct Madonna into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at a March 10 ceremony, it was announced today (February 26).

The two pop stars have been working together on Madonna's forthcoming studio album, due out later this year, as previously reported.

Also inducting this year's honourees are Lou Reed who will induct Leonard Cohen, John Fogerty who will induct The Ventures, Billy Joel who will pay tribute to John Mellencamp, and actor Tom Hanks who will induct The Dave Clark Five.

For what it's worth and from my limited memory on the subject, here is my little list of others who didnt go to their inductions:
Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones.
Roger Waters of Pink Floyd as he was still having problems with the other members.
Eric Burdon of the Animals. The others were there but he was performing a concert that night but wanted to go.
Eric Clapton didnt go for the Yardbirds as he was recording his boring Unplugged album at the time.
Stu Cook and Doug Clifford did indeed go for Credence Clearwater Revival but were banned from playing by John Fogerty. One of them wanted to slug him which would have been warranted. They were gentlemen when giving their speeches but walked out afterwards in disgust and humiliation. John even refused to let his brother's son play that night. What a guy.
Let's have a good induction this year since the DC5 and Ventures will be the only ones worth watching it for.

Stereo vs Mono -- Chad, 11:42:28 08/09/07 Thu [3]
So I finally decided to try and listen for myself the difference between the DC5's stereo and mono pressings. I have doubles of a couple of them, one happening to be mono, the other stereo. To be honest I can't make a lick of difference between them except perhaps volume. The stereo pressings are noticeably quieter through my stereo system. The only other difference I noticed was in the 5x5 album during Sitting Here Baby at the bass solo where Mike says "I like that" in the mono record it is hardly audible, where in the stereo one it's part of the song. I only have a few of these doubles so there may be more differences on other albums. The Canadian "Session" album is the same as USA "Return", though my Session one is mono and my usa one is stereo and I found very little difference except that stereo was quieter. Instrumentation, vocals, whatever, were no different to me. I'm sure folks here have a different view. Your thoughts...:-)

A few weeks ago I won a 1967 DC5 tourbook on ebay which had the setlist written in it by the person who went to the concert. It differs some from the tape of the show that is out there so in order of what was written in the book, here it is

Again from the Cleveland Plain Dealer:

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will announce its latest inductees Thursday, Dec. 13. Look for John Mellencamp to be among them.

"I found out I'm in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame," the heartland rocker said during a concert last week in Erie, Pa., according to the Erie Times-News.

Other nominees in the performer category include Afrika Bambaataa, the Beastie Boys, Chic, Leonard Cohen, the Dave Clark Five, Madonna, Donna Summer and the Ventures.

Five performers will be enshrined Monday, March 10, during a ceremony at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City, along with honorees in the sidemen and nonperformer categories.

Currently, there are 50 cover bands of The Beatles touring the US. The Stones and Led Zeppelin also have cover bands. In fact Led Zeppelin has a all girl cover band. Has anyone heard of a DC 5 cover band?

Hi Everyone
Another rare post from me. I just recently got the second in what I hope will be a long series of releases of the This Is Tom Jones tv series. The second was This Is Tom Jones Christmas. On his series Tom had a man who played guitar named Big Jim Sullivan. For those not familiar with Jim, he was probably along with Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, the busiest session guitarist in England during the 60's. He played on hundreds of sessions. I got curious on more info on him and found he has his own website. On it, there is a listing of tons of singles and albums he played on. I took special notice and saw Big Jim played on some sessions by a group of 5 guys who just happened to have a 5 in their title. So check out his website and see just what Big Jim Sullivan played for this particular group. Cheers.

This was recently a topic on Bob Shannon's "Behind The Hits" message board. In the '60s, a company out of Nashville used studio musicians and singers to record soundalike versions of the day's hits.

These were released on singles, then sold in racks at non-record retailers like drug stores for 39 cents, about half the going rate for a 45 in those days. I guess they hoped to capitalize on confusion or cash in on kids who didn't notice the difference.

Sandy Posey, who eventually had hits with "A Single Girl" and "Born a Woman" was one of the people who worked for the company. Buzz Cason, who wrote "Everlasting Love" and became a big-time writer and producer, was another session worker.

These were released on the Hit Records label.

From the discography, I was able to pull these DC5 songs:

Interesting take on the DC5's Hall of Fame candidacy on this Texas-based website.

Quoting from the column:

Just read on an AP news release the DC5 have been nominated again for the RRHF. At least they keep getting their name in there, from the early British Invasion era..the Beatles, Stones, Kinks and Animals are in the hall. Groups like Hermans Hermints, the Searchers, Gerry and the Pacemakers not even get the nod for nomination. Should the DC 5 be in the hall? Of COURSE!!! I have nothing to do with the Bits and Pieces Site that Michael Lorenzo has set up and have no idea why I was singled out for comment on the "Official" Mike Smith website. The reason I have a link to the new site is because John is working on it putting the information on that he has accumulated over the years , but I have NOTHING to do with it at all. As to the remark about a "messageboard" I'm supposedly starting...I have no clue what that's about either? Could someone please enlighten me? Having had a messageboard years ago, there's no way I'd ever have another one. I'd love to know where people get their information, because they're totally wrong on this one. It would be nice if "people" checked their sources or asked me before running their mouths on a public site and handing out false information. Lynn Briggs (that would be me) never ran a site for Mike Smith. John started the DC5 Fan Club back in 1997 before I ever met him and I didn't get involved until late in 1998. To say I ran the fan club is yet another falsehood. I was involved , but I certainly didn't "run" anything.

Found a really funny translation of an article while searching around on Google. They must have used a Universal Translator on this and it's a riot to read. Did you know the DC5 had a hit song called "Catch U.S.If You Dog"? They also had "Dog't You See That She's Mines" and "Eats Home". I've got an old LP, a re-issue of some sort featuring The Dave Clark Five and The Playbacks.

I've got it figured out that 'Chaquita' and 'In your heart' are the DC 5 and I'm assuming the rest of the material is by The Playbacks? There are no notes on the record.

Anyone know anything about it? Or who The Playbacks even are?

So at 63, he doesn't need the attention -- or money -- generated by reuniting Peter and Gordon.

Q. Why do this now?

A. Paul Shaffer called me a couple of years ago. He was organizing a benefit concert for Mike Smith, the lead singer from the Dave Clark Five. Mike had had a terrible accident and needed some help, and he'd been a good friend of mine. Paul said "What would it take to get Peter and Gordon back together?" I knew Paul would do it right, get a great band and so forth, so after checking with Gordon I said yes. I did study with a vocal coach to get my high notes back.

We'd put a lot of work into getting it together so that we sounded OK. So when other gigs came up that didn't interfere with my day job, as it were -- weekends and stuff -- we did some more.

Q. So you're Peter and Gordon again. Is it still fun?

A. Absolutely. We still sound OK. It was fun to do, and the audiences seemed to like it ... I'll admit I've always had mixed feelings about what it would be like to be an oldie, as it were. But actually it's interesting and kind of fun, because you realize how much these songs mean to people. You see somebody crying in the audience who talks afterwards about how "that was the song when I proposed to my wife."

I have no hesitation about knowing what an oldie's supposed to be. We don't suddenly say, "Here's a new song I wrote yesterday!" What we do is to do the old songs people want to hear, as close as we can to the way we did them then. It's a validly and honestly nostalgic thing. And I think acknowledging that it is, makes it a little cool.

Does anyone know if Mike is close to being released from the hospital? The last "official" update was nearly four months ago and the indication then was that some paperwork was the only obstacle preventing him from leaving and living a more normal life at home, albeit with on-site caregivers. You would think they would want to expedite the process for a patient who has been confined to the hospital for more than three years.

As always, I wish Mike nothing but the best and hope he's moving closer to getting home.

I am intrigued by the double LP set that was issued on Epic in 1970 or '71. Does anyone know the story behind it? It wasn't really a greatest hits set because some of the songs were LP cuts and B sides. It was the first and only use of stereo on some of the songs in a US release. It was also odd timing since it had been three or four years since the DC5 had a hit and even longer since their peak. Did the group owe Epic another album under their contract or something? I can't imagine that album did much business since it was after the DC5 was popular and before there was a nostalgia wave for the British Invasion era.
