Large dark eyes stared at Dawnsfire as Silverfox obediently relayed her story.

"We were sleeping. It was several nights ago and the birds were restless. Father told me that the birds always stirred when something large happened in the world, so I had taken out one of the hawks to calm it down. Before we knew what was happening, arrows were everywhere. We didn't have a chance, so I let the hawks go. At least they wouldn't get hurt, they had helped us hunt too much to get hurt for us. Then I ran. Arrows were hitting the swarm of hawks so that only a few even came near me, so I stayed as close to them as I could. We reached the lake and I swam to the middle. They didn't find me."

She shivered and shuffled her feet, voice tightening. "When all of the sounds stopped, I went back. Everyone was dead. The ones who had avoided the arrows looked as though they had been surprised, there necks cut or killing stabs marking their bodies." Think of them as corpses, not as people. Her eyes glittered with unshed tears. "Plants were everywhere, almost as though the earth wanted its land back, even if we had always respected it. Vines were everywhere."

She sniffed and ran her hand across her eyes, leaving streaks of mud in the dust on her face. "I ran to the next vilage, hoping they could help somehow. They were dead too. So was the next and next and next. I couldn't find any villages alive, so I started looking at the cities. They are gone too. The arrows are everywhere and so are the plants. I had to come find you. Nothing so bad could happen in a city as big as the one you had come to."

She fumbled in her pocket a moment before pulling out the shaft of an arrow. Green and white feathers glittered dully with specks of dry blood in the dim roomlight. It was an elven arrow.

"I checked everywhere." She ran her hand over her eyes again, trying to stop tears. "What if they did this to all of the villages?"
