That clarifies things for me. A fair observer who stands in the middle of the spectrum would think that to make either choice would be arbitrary for her. Point well taken. But again, I want to stress that this solely applies to this person or persons who share her point of view / system of beliefs.

I disagree, however, on your point (if I didn't misunderstand you) that says neither choice is better. The statement "God doesn't exist" points to a reality. If God doesn't really exist, then the aforementioned statement clearly is superior to the statement "God exists," even though the truth of the statement is in dispute.

For example, at one point in history there were many people who believed in a flat earth. There was an equal number of people who believed in a round earth. The fact that the earth's shape was in dispute did not mean either statement was just as good, as we now know.

Perhaps you and I are not in disagreement about these points... Simply a communication barrier...
