He could not properly understand the goings-on of his sister's mind. Perhaps he was still a young dracling in heart; his interior still soft and . If he did know the exactness in which his sister was thinking of their mother, he would have been astounded and even awed. How he even knew where his sister - and mother - was, was another thing entirely. Something seemed to have pulled at him only moments before, like a rope tugging at his mind....

His mother's .

He stepped from the shadows in which he had traveled to look at his mother with dry eyes. Bawling wasn't an option now, maybe it would never be again, only action. And yet, his mother was lying there, just lying there....

Tarquin tore his gaze from the golden beauty to the darker beauty, and more familiar one, of Halette. Something in her eyes, though, made him pause. What could she be thinking, he wondered as he forced himself to move towards her again.

"Halette," he said softly, tenderly breaking into her thoughts.

My eyes took hold of the deceased. At first, I stood emotionless and dumb. A blank mind replaced a mind that betrayed my heritage. Moments before I knew...I knew what everyone knows.

Voice of timid sweetness called me by name, stalling my mind a few moments from forming a question I should have asked...a question everyone must be asking now. Why?

“Yes, brother.” A stiff sound emitted from my lips, as my mind asked...and answered.

It was not death, but an escape to life she craved.

An escape from us? Maybe, she was never the motherly type. And her blood line was secure...to a point. My claw fingered the gold necklace I wore, and I remembered the one who presented the gift. He was still alive...though weak

And she had embarrassed him.

“I worry, Tarquin.” I whisper, shifting my attention to the bronze.
